A New Perspective on the July 16 Workshop

July 26, 2018 by telyhardware

People wonder how I get so much into a one week workshop. This video seems to sum it up (courtesy Randall Hankins). Was quite pleased this week with excellent discussions of subtle differences in materials, glues, pastes, and processes to make them all work nicely together. Books and art on paper all thrive when driven by knowledge of materials and combinations – only then can we achieve new, fresh levels of imagery. Copyright 2018 – Timothy C. Ely – All Rights […]

Throwback Friday: Photo’s of work from the Line of Sight show

July 13, 2018 by telyhardware

In 2010-2011, I was honored to have my work shown at The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Washington at a show I titled “Line of Sight”. These photos of works in the exhibit taken from Doug and Judith Garnett’s collection. In this show, I was also able to document some of my process – including inspirations I keep in my studio which appear in two of the photo’s. And, stay tuned for updates next week from the first […]

My Artist’s Journey, Part 3: Skills & Quality

July 10, 2018 by telyhardware

By the early 1980s, I could clearly envision the kinds of books of images that I wanted to make. Now it was time for serious ratcheting up of my skills at making books – so that their quality matched my own demanding vision of it. Artist stories often omit this part – after all skilled making of things is somehow not “intellectual” enough in today’s world. Yet success as an artist requires skills to bring what we see into reality and […]

Preparing to Hold Summer Workshops

July 5, 2018 by telyhardware

The studio looks like it was searched by the vice squad. I am preparing for a pair of workshops with slight variations. Both involve the concept and construction of a sketchbook form, the basic and some advancements as well as an introduction to a more formal structure. So – there are piles of bones and sticks and Russian flax cord and old Irish linen wire twist thread and needles and tool kits which are under revision and bottles of dirt […]

My Artist’s Journey, Part 2: The Atlas

June 30, 2018 by telyhardware

The mere act of seeking often leads to answers in surprising places. I was looking hard after leaving grad school – following the idea of making one-of-a-kind books that contained my images. I had made a few visual books, in essence small board books with all the wrong machine directions and improper adhesives. What I sensed was that the entire process of book making, its scale and the meshing of all sorts of materials and disciplines was an extraordinary place […]

My Artist’s Journey, Part 1: The Seed of the Idea

June 27, 2018 by telyhardware

In the last part of the twentieth century, I was awarded a degree, an MFA. It was a most odd thing to me to be a ‘master’ of a fine art, especially at 25 or so years of age. In the great lens of hindsight, I recall the congratulatory remarks of my committee that were at odds with my own deeply buried feeling – for I never felt less masterful, less prepared or remotely qualified for the thing which was […]
