A Visit to Reed College’s Special Collections

April 22, 2019 by telyhardware

My co-conspirator in this blog, Doug Garnett, and his son Sam Garnett, have begun filming a documentary about my work. Doug has directed national TV commercials and Sam is an excellent videographer and editor. (Here’s a clip with us busily at work in my studio.) It has been exciting to see film about my work begin to come together. While the documentary won’t be out for some time, the recent TX83 blog post has the first public example of their work. […]

Registration Open for Summer Workshop — The Sketchbook: Thoughts and Actions.

April 1, 2019 by telyhardware

I’m pleased to announce there are a few spaces still available in our second summer workshop this year which will be held July 29 – August 2, 2019. Detailed discussion of the workshop is included in this PDF brochure Sketchbook Workshops_2019. The brochure also includes the registration form. The workshop is appropriate for the beginner as well as intermediate and advanced book binders. All levels welcome, and each will find ample inspiration. Hand skills from any discipline are helpful, but bookbinding […]

Video Tour: From My TXC Series

March 4, 2019 by telyhardware

TX83 was made in 2014. It is a Drum-Leaf™ binding, non-sewn and on laminated rag paper. Individual folios were split at the fold and regrouped to form novel configurations. The paper was treated with gelatin and acrylic resin and the instrument drawing was made using ink, graphite and pigments. Several of the experiments in this book involve using half-loose guards around the sections and the leveling up for the quilt-like paper piecing of the covers. Each book in the TXC […]

SCORE (cont.):  Making, My Process and the CD

February 12, 2019 by telyhardware

I recently introduced a new work, SCORE, which can be seen at the Lilly Library at Indiana University then posted a walk-through of the piece. Although artistic process really can’t be fully explained, I enjoy hearing artists talk about their processes because I find that hints and helps come about. So with that in mind… (Note that each of the photo’s below can be clicked to expand to full resolution.) …a few details about the creation of SCORE. Last winter […]

SCORE (cont.): A Walkthrough of My Book Recently Delivered to the Lilly Library at Indiana University

February 1, 2019 by telyhardware

Last week I posted about my new work, SCORE, delivered to the Lilly Library at Indiana University. Today I wanted to share more images from the book in a bit of a guided tour. At the same time the following descriptions offer insight into the music which accompanies SCORE. What is the work? My primary works, like SCORE, start with a set of unique, one-of-a-kind spreads — in the future I’ll visit the process of creating the folios in more […]

SCORE: New Work Delivered to the Lilly Library at Indiana University

January 25, 2019 by telyhardware

SCORE Graphic Notation and composition: Timothy Ely Music and production: Larry Ellingson In February of 2018, fellow artist Larry Ellingson and I engaged in a non-stop conversation in a car, hurtling through space from the east side to the west side of Washington State, and back. Conversing wildly and led by shared interests topics ranged across brain/mind science, astronomy, history, materials, construction, and art and science in general. At the end of the road trip a collaboration had taken shape: […]

Rhizomes, Knives and Thread: Books by a Thousand Cuts (Sketchbooks, Part 3)

December 7, 2018 by telyhardware

Rhizomes are plant stalks which spread underground. Rhizomes mimic artistic growth — we must continuously create space for processes to expand within us until a new stalk pushes up somewhere, surprising us with new growth. This can occur with startling regularity. In my first post about sketchbooks, I briefly addressed the WHY of keeping a sketchbook. In Part 2, I offered some thinking about ink and what the sketchbook has taught me about working with related materials. I am saving […]

Evolution, Creativity, and Metaphysics

August 27, 2018 by telyhardware

“Creativity involves not only years of conscious preparation and training but unconscious preparation as well,” wrote Oliver Sacks in outlining the three essential elements of creativity, adding: “This incubation period is essential to allow the subconscious assimilation and incorporation of one’s influences and sources, to reorganize and synthesize them into something of one’s own.” In essence creativity is not a thing. It has no mass or weight, meaning it must be a metaphysical discharge. It can be seen as the […]

OF SCRIPTS AND STARS The Cipheric Aesthetics of Timothy C. Ely’s Cribriform Script by Ian Boyden

August 15, 2018 by telyhardware

It is possible to interpret this confrontation of script and stars.  Just as now and then a star emerges from the host—as a moving planet, as a comet—so also does a cipher, whose ideogram becomes intelligible to us, rise up now and then from the heap of incomprehensibility.  One could draw the conclusion that the limits of vision correspond to the limits of understanding. —Werner Spies[i] Everything we hear is an echo.  Anyone can see that echoes move forward and […]

Throwback Friday: Photo’s of work from the Line of Sight show

July 13, 2018 by telyhardware

In 2010-2011, I was honored to have my work shown at The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Washington at a show I titled “Line of Sight”. These photos of works in the exhibit taken from Doug and Judith Garnett’s collection. In this show, I was also able to document some of my process – including inspirations I keep in my studio which appear in two of the photo’s. And, stay tuned for updates next week from the first […]
